As the most important museum of modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is a must-see experience. Situated on Museumplein, 'the Stedelijk' opened in 1895, just ten years after the nearby Rijksmuseum, and next to the (later) Van Gogh Museum. The original building hosts a selection of one of the world's finest art collections, dating from 1870 until the present day, presented in three themes: Art up to 1950, Art 1950-Present and Design, featuring internationally-known movements: Bauhaus, Amsterdam School, De Stijl, Cobra, Abstract-expressionism, Pop art, Minimal art, Conceptual art and Dutch Design.
